2023 Fellowship

Meet the 2023 JournalismAI Fellows and explore their projects

The JournalismAI Fellowship Programme is a free online initiative where journalists and technologists from news organisations collaborate to improve journalism using AI technologies

We selected 30 journalists and technologists from 14 news organisations across the world to take part in the second edition of the Fellowship programme. Fellows collaborated in six self-selected teams on six different projects.

  • BiasBlocker aims to develop an AI plugin for journalists, editors, and media organisations to detect bias and discrimination in real-time, in English and Arabic content. The plugin utilises natural language processing, and machine learning to analyse text in the media ecosystem.

  • Team Niche aimed to develop a tool that allows for articles to be tailored for a local news audience. The tool will first identify the topics discussed in an article and determine how relevant each topic is to the target audience compared to the population as a whole. Using this information, the article is rewritten using LLMs to provide additional information such as quotes and statistics.

  • Daisy aspired to develop an AI framework that allows natural language queries on structured datasets, similar to interactions with ChatGPT. The tool aims to have the ability to use everyday language to query anything from election data, to databases on misinformation and the economy. In their envisioned MVP, users will receive output in the form of English text. Further development stages will include text in other languages and visualizations of the output.

  • TIMELARK is a journalistic research tool that makes complex timelines easy to explore and understand. Highlighting conflicting information and suspicious connections, TIMELARK uses Temporal Knowledge Graphs to extract journalistic insights from trusted sources.

  • NoticIA aims to build a framework that enables newsrooms to create AI-powered chatbots based on their content. Using Large Language Models, the project will provide instructions and code examples to help organisations interact with readers while minimising the risk of inaccurate AI responses.
